Are Scones Supposed To Be Triangle?

May 24, 2022 by Chicky Treats Leave a Comment

When it comes to baking scones, there are a variety of recipes available to help you achieve the perfect scone. American scones are usually triangular, while English scones are round. So, could either one be doing it wrong?

Scones are supposed to be either triangle or round. Historically, they were made by the Scottish into large, round, flat shapes. They would afterward cut the scones into serving-sized triangles. Since then, much has changed in how scones are made, including the form and ingredients.

This article will tell you more about scones and how the Scots invented them. I’ll also compare English scones and their American counterparts and offer you some tips for making the perfect scones. So, let’s get into it!.

How Traditional Scottish Scones Were Made

Although there is no record of exactly where scones came from, most historians believe that scones were invented in Scotland.

Unlike today’s scones made from wheat flour, these scones consisted of oats. They would be baked on a griddle over an open flame and would often be flat (because they were unleavened). Each scone would be made as large as a medium-sized plate and then cut into six triangular pieces to make them easier to serve.

So, the original scone was more like an oatmeal pancake than today’s scones.

Scones are now made worldwide, and each group of people has adopted their unique techniques for making them. Let us explore how scones from different parts of the world look.

English Scones vs. American Scones

English scones are usually round, light, fluffy, and flaky. They are not as sweet as American scones and include less butter. You may also notice raisins, cheese, or dates in these types of scones.

These scones are similar to American biscuits, and one article even suggests that American biscuits are a variation of English scones. So, expect a circular, flaky, biscuit-like pastry when you bite into an English scone. You can find a helpful recipe for English scones here.

On the other hand, American scones are triangular, crumbly, and sweet. The triangular shape comes from folding a sheet of dough to incorporate layers.

They often include eggs and more butter than the English scones. These scones are very similar to English rock cakes, and they come in flavors such as pumpkin, chocolate, berry, and cinnamon. These scones are much more like cakes than biscuits, and most people serve them like donuts or biscotti with coffee or tea for breakfast or a snack.

One key difference between these two scones is how people serve them. While English scones are served with jam and butter (meant to be put in the scone), American scones are served plain or glazed. That explains why English scones are simple and unsweetened while the latter are sweet.

So, English scones are round, while American scones are triangular. However, there are plenty of other features that differentiate these scones.

How the Rest of the World Makes Scones

As I mentioned before, different countries have adopted their unique styles of making scones. From round, triangular, diamond, and even hexagonally shaped scones, let’s explore the other varieties of scones that you can find from around the world:

  • South Africa (Amasi Scones). These scones are similar to American scones in how people prepare them. However, they are round in shape, similar to the English scones.
  • New Zealand-Style Scones. Like the English scones, these are usually round and plain and have a similar preparation method to English scones.
  • Australian Scones. These are also made in the traditional English way, and they are round in shape.
  • Italian Scones. These can either be round or diamond in shape. One thing that makes these cones unique is that people often cook them with herbs and spices such as basil. Sun-dried tomatoes are also a common ingredient.
  • Russian Scones (Sockniki). Russian scones are round-shaped scones with risotto filling. These are truly unique and well worth trying!
  • Egyptian Scones. These are round scones that feature elements from both American and English scones in terms of making them. They also feature native ingredients such as dates and tahini cream. You can find a helpful recipe here.
  • Kenyan Scones. These are round, soft, fluffy, and sometimes sweet. They have a texture that is very similar to that of bread.

An interesting fact to note is that these different countries also have different ways of pronouncing this pastry. Here is a video explaining how people pronounce it:

Tips for Achieving the Perfect Scone

Baking is both a science and an art, and scones are no exception. Although there are different ways to make scones, there are also standard do’s and don’ts to help you achieve the best results.

Here are some suggestions to help you improve your scones:

  • Do not overmix the batter. Since you want your scone to fall apart easily, ensure that you only mix once the ingredients are combined. Those stubborn lumps are a good thing when baking scones.
  • Use cold butter. This step will create pockets of butter in the dough, which will result in a crumbly and easy to split scone.
  • Use leavening agents. Baking powder is key to getting your scones to rise and become light and fluffy.
  • Take some time to chill the dough after baking. This step helps you get that flaky and tender texture you are looking for in a scone.
  • Serve them fresh. Resist the urge to bake and leave for later. Scones are best to eat when fresh, so ensure that you take them out of the oven close to serving time.

Conclusion

Although the first scones were made round and triangular, there is no wrong shape for scones. They can be round, diamond, triangle, hexagon, or any other shape you can make them in.

As scones have become more popular worldwide, many countries have added unique ingredients and cooking methods to the recipes, making their scones stand out.

Whichever scones you choose to make, keep in mind the do’s and don’ts to ensure that you always get the best outcome.

Chocolate Chip Scone Recipe

Looking for an easy chocolate chip scone recipe? Look no further! In this blog post, we will walk you through the steps to making delicious and fluffy scones. Scones are a great breakfast pastry that can be enjoyed with coffee or tea. They are also perfect for a quick snack or dessert. We will give you some tips on how to make the perfect scone, as well as provide a recipe that is sure to please everyone. Let’s get started!

How to make chocolate chip scones

Chocolate chip scones are simple to make, even for the newest of bakers.

Here’s what you’re going to need:

  • Flour
  • Chocolate chips
  • Baking powder
  • Softened butter
  • Granulated sugar
  • Heavy cream
  • Milk
  • Lemon Zest
  • Eggs

You’re probably going to read a lot of scone recipes out there that are overly complicated, but the truth is it really doesn’t have to be.

The trick is to whisk together the softened butter, sugar, and lemon zest. Then lightly beat the eggs, and mix them into the butter mixture. Little by little, add the heavy cream and milk and keep whisking.

Sift the dry ingredients together, and add in batches, before you add the chocolate chips.

Now here’s the trick – make a ball, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate it for a few hours, or even overnight.

Next, is a big decision point – do you want your scones to be round or triangular? This really comes down to your own preference, but roll out your dough – you want a nice thick circle of about 2.5″, then and cut out your scones with your favorite pastry cutter.

Finally, brush with milk or heavy cream, then sprinkle the tops with sugar, and bake for 15-18 minutes at 400F.

That’s all there is to it!

Still have questions? We have answers.

What can I substitute for heavy cream in scones

If you’re in a pinch and don’t have heavy cream on hand, there are a few substitutes that will work just as well in scones. One option is to use sour cream, which has a similar consistency and will add a nice tanginess to the scones. Another option is to mix together equal parts milk and melted butter. This will give the scones a richness without being too heavy. Or, if you want a non-dairy option, you can use coconut cream or full-fat yogurt. Just be sure to thin out the yogurt with a little bit of milk before adding it to the scone dough. With any of these substitutes, your scones will still be light, fluffy, and delicious.

Do scones rise in the oven?

Many people are stumped as to how scones rise in the oven. The answer is actually quite simple – it’s all thanks to the baking powder. Baking powder is a leavening agent, which means that it helps doughs and batters to rise. When scones are placed in the oven, the heat causes the baking powder to activate and release gas bubbles. These gas bubbles get trapped in the scone dough, causing it to rise and giving the scone its characteristic light and fluffy texture. So next time you enjoy a scone, remember to thank the humble baking powder for its role in making this delicious treat!

Can I use Greek yogurt instead of heavy cream in scones?

If you’re looking for a delicious, cream-filled scone recipe, you may be wondering if you can substitute Greek yogurt for heavy cream. The answer is yes! Greek yogurt scones are a great way to get all of the flavor and texture of traditional scones without all of the fat. Simply swap out the heavy cream for an equal amount of Greek yogurt and you’ll be good to go. Keep in mind that scones made with Greek yogurt will be slightly more dense than those made with heavy cream, but they will still be just as delicious. So go ahead and give it a try – your taste buds will thank you!

Why brush scones with milk or cream?

One of the most important steps in making scones is brushing them with milk or cream before baking. This simple step helps to create a crispy, golden-brown exterior. But why does it work? The fat in the milk or cream forms a barrier that prevents the scones from drying out during baking. In addition, the milk or cream helps the scones to brown more evenly. As a result, brushing scones with milk or cream results in a better-tasting, more visually appealing final product. So next time you’re making scones, don’t skip this important step!

Chocolate Crepes

April 1, 2022 by Chicky Treats Leave a Comment

Chocolate crepes are a delicious and decadent dessert that can be enjoyed any time of year. They are perfect for special occasions, or simply when you want something sweet and satisfying. In this blog post, we will discuss how to make chocolate crepes, as well as some delicious toppings that you can add. We hope you enjoy them!

How to make chocolate crepes

Crepes are simple to make, although they can seem intimidating.  Think of crepe mixture as a much runnier pancake batter, and most of the ingredients are the same.  The main ingredients are:

  • Eggs
  • Flour
  • Milk
  • Cocoa powder

The trick is cooking the crepes.  You need a well greased pan.  Any shallow frying pan will do, but if you really want the authentic experience, consider a crepe pan, which will work better and better over time.

You’ll also need a spatula to help you unstick the crepes if they get stuck.

What flour is best for crepes

There are many different types of flour that can be used to make crepes, but not all flour is created equal. For the best results, you’ll want to choose a flour that has a high protein content and is finely milled. One type of flour that fits these criteria is either all-purpose flour or cake flour. Both of these flours are made from wheat and have a high protein content, which gives crepes a nice, fluffy texture. Another option is rice flour, which is gluten-free and has a slightly sweeter flavor. Whichever type of flour you choose, be sure to sift it before using to avoid any lumps in your crepes. With the right flour, you’ll be on your way to making

What is crepe batter made of?

crepes are a type of thin pancake that is popular in France. The batter is made with eggs, milk, flour, and a little bit of sugar. In the case of chocolate crepes like these, we also add some cocoa powder. Crepes are usually cooked in a skillet or on a griddle, and they can be served with a variety of sweet or savory toppings. crepes are typically enjoyed for breakfast or as a dessert, but they can also make a delicious lunch or dinner crepe. There are endless possibilities when it comes to crepes, so get creative and enjoy!

Why are my crepes not crispy?

If you’re wondering why your crepes aren’t coming out crispy, there are a few possible explanations. First of all, make sure that you’re using the right kind of crepe batter. A crepe batter should be thin and runny, so if your batter is too thick, that could be the problem. Another possibility is that you’re not cooking the crepes long enough. Crepes should be cooked until they’re golden brown and slightly crispy around the edges. Finally, make sure that you’re using enough oil or butter in the pan. If the crepes are sticking to the pan, they won’t be able to get crispy. By following these tips, you should be able to make perfect crepes every time!

How much batter to use per crepe?

Making crepes is an art, and one of the most important aspects is getting the batter just right. If you use too much batter, your crepes will be thick and dense. On the other hand, if you use too little batter, they will be thin and delicate. So how do you know how much batter to use?

A good rule of thumb is to use about ¼ cup of batter for each crepe. This will yield crepes that are about 8 inches in diameter. If you want to make smaller crepes, you can use less batter. And if you want to make larger crepes, you can use more batter. Just keep in mind that the thinner the crepe, the more delicate it will
